We launch the SIMA programme at the new Sound Lounge with a very strong double bill.
Leading off is the Gerard Masters Trio (starting at 8pm) followed by two sets from the Bernie McGann Trio (9pm).
Since first making his presence felt on the local scene Gerard Masters has developed in several interesting ways. The solos are more terse but not at the expense of essential detail; the self-confident flamboyance is only just below the surface to reveal itself when the music is most intense and barely under control.

“Some how [McGann] seemed to blow from his toes up, his whole body involved in the effortless production of a huge sound. Fried bananas it may have been but his full tone instantly hit its mark. I struggled as I listened, who does this guy sound like … but it was a waste of time … McGann’s sound is all his own, full with a fractured polyphonic quality his effortless mastery fully evident.” —Adrian Cullen (www.cabermusic.com) on McGann in Scotland.
