
The feel is classic hard-bop but the band moves way beyond any stylistic limits set by that idiom with veteran pianist Dave Levy absolutely brilliant.
Bertles is one of the founders of the Sydney hard-bop scene of the late 50s and early 60s when he played jazz in his spare time and in the horn sections of bands like Johnny O’Keefe’s to pay the bills.
That was a long time ago but he still has that edge.
Also another chance to hear Warwick Alder whose trumpet playing can only be described with the aid of superlatives.
