Triosk

Kicking off this sensational double-header is Triosk (8.30–9.30pm), back at SIMA following the successful release of their third studio album, The Headlight Serenade, awarded with critical acclaim across the globe:

Highly commendable… Triosk has all the ingredients for a long and successful creative run, filled with surprises and sundry delights. – BBC, Aug 2006.

Plugging in to your subconscious, every track fills the spaces in your mind with a riot of vivid colours… Every track is compelling and haunting. – The Observer (UK), July 2006.

...a slowly unwinding, shimmering set of lethal beauty. – SMH, June 2006.

...a beautiful and occasionally disconcerting assimilation of electronic instrumentation and jazz ideology… Miles away and miles ahead of their contemporaries. – Rich Hanscomb, Rank! Magazine, June 2006.

In a live setting, Triosk fluctuate between the atmospheric sound-scapes of their recorded work and high-energy minimalist improvisations dedicated to the exploration of the trio’s musical possibilities and limits.

Still asking questions of themselves and their music, Triosk continue to forge ahead into new territory between jazz, electronics/digital technology and acoustic improvised music.

After a successful seven-city Australian tour, the unique trio are back at the Sound Lounge with new material and reconstructions of pieces from the last 6 years.

Jackson Harrison

Harrison was nothing short of superb – John Clare.

Fresh from winning this year’s National Jazz Award at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, Jackson Harrison (pictured) is one of the most exciting young pianists to emerge from Sydney in recent years.

At just 25 years of age, Jackson has already spent some time living, studying and performing in New York City, where the influences of the scene and musicians such as Uri Caine, Marc Copland, David Kikowski, Fred Hersch and others inspired him to ompose new work, while back in Sydney, one of his new compositions was recorded for the Mike Nock Project.

Tonight, in his third appearance for SIMA, Jackson leads the trio, featuring long-standing musical partner Ben Waples with Tim Firth on drums, in a set which will highlight a fresh batch of Jackson’s new tunes. 10.00 – 11.00pm.
