Smooth and sophisticated trombone work and ingenious compositions – Geoff Chapman, Toronto Star.
SIMA welcomes back Canadian trombonist Darren Sigesmund and his band, who last performed at The Sound Lounge in 2005. With the upcoming release of his recording, Strands, Darren continues to establish his quintet as a leading contemporary jazz ensemble with international credentials.
Strands – a contemporary blend of jazz, Latin and classical influences – features compositions by Sigesmund that have been showcased across Canada and at festivals and clubs throughout Australia and Asia since 2004. Rolling Stones’ Saxophonist, Tim Ries, endorses Strands for its incredibly well crafted pieces [and] fantastic vehicles for improvisational exploration… I give my highest recommendation.
Darren has studied and performed at the internationally renowned Banff Jazz Workshop with acclaimed artists, including Dave Holland, Dave Liebman and Steve Coleman. For this Australian tour, made possible with the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, Darren brings an all-star band of musicians, with David Braid on piano (one of Canada’s most gifted young jazz pianists and composers and Juno Award winner, National Jazz Award recipient); award-winning Quinsin Nachoff on saxophone, prominent recording artist Jim Vivian on bass and popular young drummer Anthony Michelli.
…an alluring trombone solo from Sigesmund, whose warm, melancholic sound glistened with quiet intensity – Jessica Nicholas, The Age.
