Trio Apoplectic

Providing more evidence of the strength and depth of younger players… As accomplished as saxophonist Dave Jackson, bassist Abel Cross and drummer Alex Masso were individually, they were above all collectively assured, with a fine balance of dynamics, intent and realization – John Shand, SMH, 2006.

Following on from their successful performance at Jazz:Now in September, tonight is a great opportunity to catch this hot young trio.

Playing together for four years, with a repertoire comprising of everything from jazz standards, to original compositions, to free improvisation, the group has performed throughout Australia and made their debut recording this year.

Dave Jackson (alto saxophone) Abel Cross (double bass) Alex Masso (drums & cymbals) with special guest Warwick Alder

Saxophonist and composer James Ryan has spent much of the past decade dividing his time between the Northern Territory and Europe, where he lived and performed for four years, teaching in between at the Canberra School of Music (ANU) and The QLD Conservatorium of Music (Griffith University).

Originally from Darwin, he has been based in Sydney since 2003. It is perhaps this diversity of landscape and the sheer distances that inform the band’s first recording, Long Way Home, a CD described as vibrant, expressive and highly enjoyable by Sandy Evans.

Come and hear Ryan’s energetic, hyper-fast playing for yourself!

A unique and talented player who may well become Australia’s next Bernie McGann – Jim Budd, Jazz Queensland.
