Satoko Fujii

A virtuoso piano improviser, an original composer and a band-leader who gets the best collaborators to deliver – The Guardian, UK.

Jazz lovers around the world need to start taking note of her attack – and her restraint, which is even more impressive – Global Rhythm.

SIMA is thrilled to present the internationally acclaimed Satoko Fujii Trio, in association with The Melbourne International Womens Jazz Festival.

Internationally renowned as an innovative and fearless pianist who combines free jazz and avant-garde rock with softer, more lyrical compositions, Satoko’s boundary-breaking style is described as a kaleidoscope of sound – an absolutely essential listen for anyone interested in the future of jazz.

Fujii’s trio is a tight and cohesive unit… the musicians continue to successfully push the boundaries of the trio format with their relentless energy and very original brand of multi-cultural jazz and free improvisation.

Satoko Fujii is one of the more arresting new voices in jazz, an intriguing pianist and composer who in the few brief years of her career has been creating personal intersections between the music of her native Japan and the traditions of free jazz. In the process, she’s developing genuinely exciting and original music – Stuart Broomer, Coda.

Expect the unexpected.
