Tim Bruer Quartet has a creative and organic approach to a repertoire that ranges from hard driving Modal tunes through to lyrical, European style pieces, to more R&B influenced songs from their recently released debut CD. Bruer’s “thoughtful and rhythmically charged piano playing” (John Shand, SMH) is joined by the tight sound and relaxed phrasing of Sean Coffin’s tenor saxophone and one of Sydney’s most flexible rhythm sections: bassist Brett Hirst and drummer Simon Barker.
Since last playing for SIMA in 2007, the quartet has completed a couple of “mini tours” which included performances in Canberra and Adelaide. This SIMA gig will feature many pieces from the CD, as well as some new material.
The quartet is entirely sympathetic to the contemporary style and the soloing is exciting at every turn – Ron Spain, Jazz Scene.
Tim Bruer’s debut CD features great performances from his all-star quartet in a program of well crafted modern jazz originals. An enjoyable romp through the contemporary musical landscape – Mike Nock.
