With solo piano performances by Mark Isaacs, Chris Abrahams, Judy Bailey, Matt McMahon, Mike Nock and Rai Thistlethwayte.
The Sydney Improvised Music Association Inc (SIMA) is excited to announce it has replaced its old piano with a superb new Yamaha grand C5. After 10 years of owning a now 35-year old Kawai piano, played by most of Australia’s leading jazz pianists from Mike Nock to Paul Grabowsky and a number of artists from overseas, SIMA was struggling to find the resources to buy a piano worthy of the reputation of the organization and able to do justice to the high standard of our performers as well as meeting the expectations of our audience, musicians, the national and international jazz industry and the media.
Yamaha Australia offered their support by supplying a brand new C5 grand piano, which together with a successful Fundraising Event to be held on 30th July (Tickets $50 by calling Seymour Theatre Box Office 9351 7940), will mean SIMA can continue to present the best in contemporary jazz on an new, high quality instrument from one of the world’s leading manufacturers.
SIMA’s new 7ft Yamaha Grand is a huge bonus to both audiences and musicians alike and ensures Australian’s top jazz musicians will consistently be heard at their very best.

SIMA is about contemporary, improvised music – an exciting genre and one which requires a piano of matching modern and high standards. It’s a great vote of confidence from Yamaha, an internationally recognisable brand, to so generously support SIMA in this venture. It reinforces SIMA’s place as the leading contemporary music organisation it has become over 25 years of dedication to Australian jazz. I and other Australian and international pianists are looking forward to years of creating great music on this piano.
-Mark Isaacs, pianist
The new Yamaha was delivered last week – amid the excitement of the International Piano Competition held throughout July at The Seymour Theatre – and played for the first time by Chris Abrahams (of The Necks) on Friday 11th at the Ned Rothenberg Trio gig. The packed audience were delighted with the sound and the piano looked superb on the stage. Chris Abrahams was thrilled to try out the new instrument, saying “It’s an honour to be the first”. He will be back again to play the piano tonight … It will be a memorable and exciting night in Sydney’s live music scene.
