Squall

French horn player Stephen Morley is probably best known for his work with his sextet Squall, who released their debut CD on Rufus Records last year. In this new project, Morley joins forces with saxophone/bass clarinet player Paul Cutlan, bassist Steve Elphick and drummer Toby Hall.

The group will draw on a broad range of influences, including composers such as Ornette Coleman and Tom Varner, to present a program of original music that takes full advantage of this unique line-up.

There have been a very few fine jazz (French horn) players appear now and then… we can add Sydney-based Stephen Morley to the list… The primary news is Morley’s own playing here, which is consistently impressive, and makes good use of the tonal qualities of his instrument… – Adrian Jackson, ‘Rhythms’ magazine, December 2007.

Stephen Morley’s agility on the instrument is matched by the quality of his compositions – Peter Wockner, ‘Limelight ‘ magazine, June 2007.

Undeniably a beautiful and vivacious album- Nate Dorward, Cadence Jazz Magazine, New York, August 2007.
