Independently of the creative powers of the three musicians, this is a tribute to Evans the composer – one of the country’s finest – and the repertoire she has moulded specifically for this stripped-down band. Great melodies, often carrying whiffs of Eastern mystery, abounded … Evans is even better known as a saxophonist than as a composer, and this band is a purpose-built showcase for her playing – John Shand, SMH.
In its relatively short life this group has notched up some impressive scores: a European tour in 2002 included enthusiastically received performances at JazzFest Berlin, the release of a fine CD and Sandy’s award as Australian Jazz Musician of the year in the inaugural Bell Awards.
Sandy Evans has been part of so many important groups both past and present, like Women and Children First, Clarion Fracture Zone, the Bronson/Evans/Robson Quintet (all as co-leader) and Ten Part Invention, The catholics, the Australian Art Orchestra, the Gai Bryant Quartet and GEST-8 where she is a key soloist/composer.
In the trio, however, she sets her own direction through the material or choice of instrument. A formidable soloist on tenor and soprano, the trio is a perfect vehicle for her instrumental talent.
