Joshua Redman

intensely focused but unpressured and completely in command… The New York Times

Born into jazz royalty, saxophonist and composer Joshua Redman never considered music a vocation. As a Harvard graduate accepted into Yale Law School, it was a gap year spent in Brooklyn that proved fateful as he cut his jazz teeth and immediately became absorbed in the thriving New York scene. Renowned now as one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged in the decade of the 1990s, he is the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff. The early influences of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Cannonball Adderley and his father, Dewey Redman, as well as The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, the Temptations, Earth, Wind and Fire, Prince, The Police and Led Zeppelin drew Joshua more deeply into music.

In addition to his own projects, Redman has recorded and performed with outstanding musicians including Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, Aaron Goldberg, Bill Frisell, Charlie Haden (both of whom are also in Sydney at the same time as Joshua), Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, Roy Haynes, Billie Higgins, Milt Jackson, Quincy Jones, B.B. King, Joe Lovano, Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny, The Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder.

A multiple Grammy Award nominee and winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition (1991), Joshua Redman has garnered top honors in critics and readers polls of DownBeat, Jazz Times, The Village Voice and Rolling Stone. Redman has since gone on to become one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists of his generation.

An outstanding performer recognised for his energy, invention and artistry, Joshua Redman will be performing with his characteristic trio featuring the brilliant young powerhouse rhythm section of bassist Reuben Rogers (left) and drummer Greg Hutchinson.
