Jaw-hit-the-floor kind of playing… Forget Esperanto, The Translators’ music is the real universal language – The Australian
Stage
The Translators are a Sydney based ensemble that have come together on this project through a mutual love of jazz, flamenco and world music, creating compositions that interplay these influences producing music with the richest of cultural sounds. Following the launch their self-titled debut album at The Basement in June, The Translators have now released their unique brand of flamenco-jazz-fusion to the world.
Playing original compositions by all four members, The Translators sound like no other group – theirs is a unique blend of flamenco and jazz improvisation that is exciting music to hear both live and recorded.
Led by Steve Hunter, one of Australia’s most accomplished electric bass players and bandleaders, the band also features James & Ben Hauptmann, both of whom have made a big impact on the Sydney Jazz scene, (Ben recently finishing 2nd at the National Jazz Awards at The Wangaratta Festival of Jazz) while guitarist Damien Wright is at the forefront of contemporary Flamenco guitar playing in Australia.
The Translators played their first gigs in Sydney around a year ago and have since toured Australia’s east coast and done a five city tour of Sumatra and Java, receiving hugely positive responses from audiences and the press alike.
With the rhythmic and melodic intensity of Flamenco and the harmonic warmth and improvisational passion of jazz, The Translators are one of the most unique groups Australia has produced. Come and hear them for yourself!
