Mark Isaacs Resurgence Band

Following Asian and Australian tours in 2007/08 the Mark Isaacs Resurgence Band’s debut CD Tell It Like It Is (recorded live at the Sound Lounge, Sydney) was released by the ABC in May and followed by another successful national tour.

With a heady brew of virtuoso playing and lyrical or grooving compositions by Mark, the Resurgence band reclaims the good name of jazz fusion – melding as it does soul, gospel, blues, Latin, classical and R&B influences into an open-ended acoustic jazz framework. Audiences and critics alike are quick to praise the group as “the finest band Mark Isaacs has had” (John Shand, SMH).

Defined as “what jazz should sound like at the advent of the 21st Century” (All About Jazz, USA), the debut CD garnered an ARIA Award nomination for Best Jazz Album and an Australian Classical Music Award for Instrumental Work of the Year.

Formed in the wake of Mark’s USA recording of the same name (with American luminaries drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and saxophonist Bob Sheppard) the all-Australian Resurgence Band features some of Sydney’s outstanding jazz musicians. Don’t miss the chance to catch their brilliant sound tonight!

Monstrously brilliant….a prodigious group driven by a charismatic genius…. a composer and musician utterly unencumbered by boundaries who has a breathtaking aptitude for making feeling and experience audible – Australian Stage Online

There are many reasons why Tell It Like It Is is Isaacs’ best and hottest jazz album to date, but the Resurgence Band’s energy and acute interplay, mixed with some of the pianist’s best charts ever, make it an album that deserves attention far beyond Australia’s shores John Kelman, All About Jazz (USA)
