Australian jazz singing doesn’t come any better than this – Weekend Australian

Multiple winner of Australian Jazz Vocalist of the Year Aria Award, Melbourne based arranger, band leader and jazz vocalist Michelle Nicolle is Australia’s first lady of jazz.

With a full-ranging, marvellous voice reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald and Betty Carter, her profile has been rapidly rising since she won first place at the Wangaratta International Jazz Festival.

Now with five beautiful and critically acclaimed albums behind her, her sixth The Loveliest Night released on ABC Records this year, has garnered critical praise.

Michelle has toured Australia, Asia and Europe, appearing at many prestigious festivals, including North Sea Jazz Festival (Holland), Tokyo Jazz Festival and the Penang International Jazz Festival next month. Known for her ability to get right to the heart of a song, as well as being an in-the-moment improviser Michelle has continually developed and nurtured her art form with the help of her band, some of Melbourne’s most in-demand musicians.

Michelle Nicolle has a rare flair for jazz singing…lively ingenuity in her phrasing, interpretation, improvising and in her exploitation of her considerable range – John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald

Formidable technique and a staggering range…more interesting than most other jazz vocalists in the country – Rolling Stone

Thoroughly entertaining…the vocal pyrotechnics were breathtaking – Evening Post (Wellington International Jazz Festival)
