More than 15 years ago, The catholics proved it was possible to apply some of the vocabulary of modern jazz to the grammar of party music. Zoe and the Buttercups rekindle this spirit of fun… – SMH
Described as “wonderfully laid back” (Herald Sun) this is the Buttercups debut performance for SIMA. Zoe Hauptmann’s album Buttercuppin has been described as “jazzabilly”, due to it’s foray into country, rock, funk, reggae, ballads and deft improvisations by the pick of the crop of Sydney’s young jazz players.
At home in almost any setting they’ve played a variety of shows ranging from Jazz in the garden at Vaucluse house to the Melbourne Jazz festival. Influential jazz musicians in their own right, the band includes award-winning guitarist Aaron Flower, saxophonist Dan Waples, trombonist John Hibbard, drummer James Hauptmann and Ben Hauptmann on the banjo. Featuring original compositions by Zoe, join us at the Sound Lounge for two hours of cheery, foot-tapping music to salve the soul.
Bassist Zoe Hauptmann is the guiding light behind this weird and wonderful blend of jazz, bluegrass and rock that will by turns elicit laughs, cries of “Yee-ha!” and cool nods of intellectual approval – John Shand, SMH.
