This will be the first performance by Sidecar for SIMA since the heady Side-On days. The musicians involved in this project have become quite well known through various other ensembles, including Alcohotlicks, Elana Stone Band and Zoe & The Buttercups.
Since graduating from Sydney Conservatorium in 2002, John has worked in a wide range of musical genres, including the whimsical pop of King Curly, the frenetic lounge metal of Michael Lira’s Darth Vegas and the filmic evocations of Julian Curwin’s Tango Saloon. He performs regularly with the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra, contributing four bombastic compositions so far. John’s arrangement of Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven was featured on the 2006 recording The Mothership Plays the Music of Mike Nock. He has also written and performed for Sam Golding’s Glorious Sousaphonics and Martin Kay’s Invisible City, both ensembles of many horns and reckless abandon.
In this quartet, led by John Hibbard, the men of Sidecar play their classic repertoire and revel in a unique vocabulary that only much shared experience can nurture. Tonight, expect music from their debut album Dreams of the Middle Class as well as new material penned mainly by Hibbard.
