Sydney alto saxophonist Bernie McGann these days enjoys iconic status, recognised here and abroad as one of the great originals of Australian jazz – Adrian Jackson, Limelight, Feb 2010
SIMA is thrilled to present two nights of the Bernie McGann Quartet, both celebrating the launch of two exciting live recordings: Solar and Double Dutch, both on the Rufus label. For this performance, National Jazz Award winning saxophonist Roger Manins, who guested with McGann on the gigs recorded for Solar, joins the band.
Solar and Double Dutch feature Lloyd Swanton and John Pochee but since then the band has transitioned to a new rhythm section of Brendan Clarke on bass and Andrew Dickeson on drums. Expect high energy and a strong rapport on stage with this quartet as Manins adds his unique sound to two sets of exceptional music. The quartet will return next Friday night for explorations into European sounds with the launch of the second album, Double Dutch.
