…a bruising quality to Sean Coffin’s tenor saxophone… The fascinating ‘his Much’ has the saxophone at its most compelling, with a fragility now co-habiting alongside the usual muscular, keening sound… – John Shand (SMH August 2009)
1992 saw the birth of an emerging jazz/musical collaboration in the ‘youngster’ Coffin Brothers. This year 2010 sees the ‘more distinguished’ Coffin Brothers as a headline name with many years of experience and a lot of musical miles under their belts. All of the music is written by Sean and never ceases to keep you in the moment and on the edge of your seat. They will be performing music from their second CD release Living In Apocalyptic Times (Krishandtali Records) as well as a couple of new tunes.
This combination has been around for quite a few years now and there is an instinctive quality to the way they combine with each other. Sean Coffin is, naturally enough, the dominant voice in the band. Not surprisingly, given the amount of time he has spent studying and working in the States he has an approach (and proficiency) that would not be out of place in a ‘typical’ New York blowing session – Adrian Jackson (Rhythms, Sept 2009)
Studio session of deliciously chewy post bop. Sean Coffin’s gruff and gristly tenor breathes unrelenting bursts of energy into nearly every original except the slow samba ‘Cutez’ and ‘This Much’ with sombre dark shadows rivalling ‘St James Infirmary’ – Peter Wockner (Limelight Magazine)
The quartet is as integrated as a computer chip throughout these mostly up-tempo originals with Sean’s edgy tenor driving the excitement… – John McBeath (The Australian August 2009)
