Seminal, brilliant post-modern jazz – Downbeat (USA)
After a two-year lay-off, the Coolerators are back and cooler than ever! With a new bass/drums combo in Paul Meader (Robin Nolan Trio) and Danny Heifetz (Tango Saloon, The Fantastic Terrific Munkle) and new tunes, the Coolerators return once again their twisted take on the jazz organ combo genre.
Phillip Johnston’s diverse activities include three upcoming CDs: Friday The 13th: The Micros Play Monk (The Microscopic Septet – USA), Boggy Creek Bop (SNAP – Australia) and Not So Fast (The Spokes – USA); the recent film score for Mr. Sin: The Abe Saffron Story (ABC), music for two radio plays for the ABC (Hilary Bell’s Beautiful Hands and Catherine Fargher’s The Jetty) and an upcoming performance of his original scores for the films of Georges Méliès at the Sydney Opera House.
The New Yorker has called Johnston a “world-class instrumentalist” while France’s Improjazz described his most recent CD, Page of Madness, as “one of the richest forms of written jazz, plucked from the air by the musicians with great intelligence and immense emotional power.”
Come and see what Johnston and his band have been up to for yourself…
