SIMA presents a rare and exciting opportunity to hear the legendary Barre Phillips for the first time in Sydney, in a free wheeling trio of renowned and formidable musicians.

Barre Phillips is acknowledged as one of the world’s leading innovators on bass, an extraordinary musician who expanded the instrument’s vocabulary and role in contemporary improvised music. His recording Journal Violone (Opus One, London) is the first recorded album of solo free double bass in the history of jazz.

He has collaborated with many of the great improvisers including Coleman Hawkins, Cecil Taylor, Eric Dolphy, Archie Shepp, Chick Corea, Benny Golson, George Russell, Lee Konitz and Ornette Coleman as well as collaborating as a composer in the fields of contemporary dance, film and graphic arts, working with Leonard Bernstein and The New York Philharmonic.

This exclusive trio performance sees a reunion with Australia’s own legendary pianist/ composer, Mike Nock, with whom Barre played very exploratory, avant-garde jazz improvisation in San Francisco in the late 1960s when the city was still the centre of the counter-culture and a major jazz centre on the West Coast of the USA.

Barre’s tour has been organised by Australian violinist/composer Jon Rose, who over 30 years has been a leading light in improvised music in Australia and overseas and is the third part of this unique and exciting line-up.
