“Surges with Latin exuberance executed with admirable technique…” John McBeath, The Australian
Havana-born, Brisbane-based, Marialy Pacheco represents the next generation of Cuban jazz pianists, an heir to the achievements of piano greats such as Ruben Gonzalez, Cesar Perdoso and Chucho Valdes. Steeped in the rhythms of her native Cuba and influenced by her appreciation of the jazz tradition, Marialy delivers commanding performances where her love of melody and ability to generate driving rhythm combine in equal measure, always imbuing her playing with highly nuanced improvisations. Since arriving here only a few years ago she has already performed widely across Australia, attracting critical and audience acclaim.
In 2002 she won the coveted “Jo-Jazz” piano competition with Grammy award-winner Chucho Valdez presiding over the jury. Her exquisite compositions combined with virtuosic piano technique are a spine tingling experience earning her international acclaim throughout extensive tours of Europe and performances in South America, including Dresden Jazz Festival and guest soloist at concerts with guitarist Tommy Emmanuel. She has also released five independent albums and in 2011 was a finalist at Europa Fest International Jazz Competition in Bucharest, Romania.
This is an exciting and exclusive opportunity to experience the music of this talented young star on the rise as she plays in trio over two nights at The Sound Lounge with the outstanding rhythm section of Alex Boneham (bass) and Joe Marchisella (drums).
