“Suite SIMA is a musical tribute to the Sydney Improvised Music Association for their long, ongoing contribution to Sydney’s creative jazz community. Many outstanding careers have been nurtured through their support with much great music created and heard under their auspices, played by top Australian or visiting artists.” Mike Nock
In a fitting tribute to the Sydney Improvised Music Association, Mike Nock has composed a stunning 65-minute suite that ranges from lyrical melodies to collective free improvisations. It expresses some of the music that has been played at SIMA concerts over the years and features SIMA veterans Phil Slater and James Greening, his trio of James Waples and Brett Hirst, plus three outstanding emerging talents saxophonists Karl Laskowski, Peter Farrar and recent addition to the band guitarist Carl Morgan.
The Suite is a journey through various musical experiences, with the five main sections blending into each other through a series of improvised transitions, and all musicians soloing at various points.
Tonight he launches the studio album, recorded in April this year.
