8.30 - 9.30pm        Steve Barry Trio

“Steven Barry, a young New Zealander, has brought his dazzling skills as a pianist and composer to Sydney. He shrugged aside cliche, deployed scintillating articulation, and gave his colleagues such ingenious raw material as the Bartok-inspired Clusters. Boneham's solos were a lesson in how vigour may be harnessed to sensitivity, while Firth layered rhythmic puzzles into the grooves without rendering them academic, and soloed with panache...” John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald

Steve Barry crossed the ditch in early 2009 and has quickly become one of Sydney’s most sought-after pianists, having worked with many prominent Australasian and international artists including John Hollenbeck (USA), Theo Bleckmann (USA), George Coleman Jr. (USA), Arun Luthra (USA), Tricia Evy (FRA) and the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra.

Joined by the heavyweight rhythm section of Alex Boneham on bass and 2011 National Jazz Award winner Tim Firth on drums, the Steve Barry Trio focuses on lyrical melodies, deep grooves and group interaction, and demonstrates a unique collective rapport.

10.00 – 11.00pm    Tim Clarkson Trio

“Clarkson is constantly engaging and driving on alto and tenor saxophone....There are metric modulations... creating a maze of negotiated rhythms through which irresistible momentum can still be felt.” - John Clare

SIMA welcomes back saxophonist/composer Tim Clarkson after his SIMA debut in 2011. The Tim Clarkson Trio has matured through their numerous performances at festivals and jazz clubs, showcasing Tim’s talents as a bandleader. An active member of the Hannah James Group and Dan Barnett's Big Band, Tim has also performed  internationally and nationally with a diverse array of artists, including George Benson and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

His second album, recorded in 2011 in New York City in collaboration with pianist Barney McAll, follows on from the successful debut release of Crab in 2010.

Tim's rhythm section are a vital component of his trio. Alex Boneham has been touring and playing with Joel Frahm, George Garzone and Jamie Oehlers, three of the most prolific and groundbreaking saxophonists in the world today. He plays regularly with James Muller and is gaining stature as one of Sydney's premiere bass players. Cameron Reid, semi-finalist in the 2011 National Jazz Awards and drummer of choice for James Valentine, Jane Irving and The Dilworths, is constantly evolving his deep sense of groove and astonishing his peers with his virtuosity.

Tim’s bouyant compositions create a playful dynamic in the band, who have been playing together for four years. In that time, the trio has further developed its own sound, with a versatility and intuitive understanding of the rhythm and complexity of contemporary jazz.
